Coleman Review

8 Oct

This article is about how and why bottled water is so popular and why Americans buy so much of it. The audience is intended to be people who drink bottled water, those who don’t recycle, and people who prefer bottled over tap water. The article is appealing to people who are planet and eco friendly but I think it is trying to get the attention of those who aren’t aware of the hazardous acts.

The writer is using mostly logos and pathos to construct this argument. He uses logos by saying that filtered water from the sink of refrigerator is better, more eco friendly, and safer for all people to drink. The writer goes on to say that the water from the Missouri river is similar to Yoo-Hoo, yet it is turned into fresh, clean water through the filtering process. He uses pathos by pointing out these things and saying that we may be the ones to eventually ruin the planet if we continue to over use water bottles and not recycle properly.

I am not sure if I can say this argument is an effective one. Throughout the piece I was a little unclear as to what was being argued. Mark made good points and I agree that we should be more conscious as to what we’re doing with these materials.

The Trouble with Diversity

3 Oct

The audience of this piece is all people. Michaels is writing to make people think about what they think is important, what use to be important, and what is important now. The main topics that he repeats are wealth, race, and overall cultural diversity.

Michaels immediately showed ethos through his writing. He also showed that he was knowledgeable about American history and one of the most popular books, the Great Gatsby. He also plays a lot on pathos. He goes on to say that just because someone is richer than you, doesn’t mean that they are a better person. He supported this point by bringing up the conversation between F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. I think that Michaels continues on with his pathos by saying just because someone is whiter than you, doesn’t mean that they are a better person either. Michaels goes on to talk about cultural diversity and how the life long debate on racism shouldn’t even be around. This is where he presents the most pathos.

I think this was a very effective argument. I like the points that he posed and I feel that they strongly supported hid argument. I am still a bit confused about what exactly he was writing to prove, but Michaels gave key points and backed them up with his knowledge, credibility, and writing skills.

Taking Food Seriously

26 Sep

The audience of this writing is America. In my opinion the writer is trying to grab the attention of those people who don’t eat healthy and who don’t cook meals. He tries to appeal to them by giving examples of how people go to fast food restaurants more than they cook at home. He goes on to critique those people who claim that they cook, stating that heating up processed food in a microwave is not cooking.

The author uses logos and pathos to persuade the audience. He uses logos because all the facts that he is saying are true, but he also uses pathos to state those facts. He does not really want people to feel bad about what they eat daily, but he wants people to go out and change their diets. He wants people to take food, their diet, and their health seriously.

The argument is effective to me. I agree with everything that the author is saying. The title alone makes you read in detail. It is time that people start taking food seriously because it has the power to affect your overall health. The author presented ideas that everyone can relate to and he says them in a way that is not critical but informative. That is what makes the argument effective to me.

Rhetorical Analysis of Short Argumentative Paper

25 Sep

The audience of the short argumentative paper was our classmates. I was trying to prove to the class that Forrest Gump was the greatest movie of all time. I appealed to my audience by using appropriate vocabulary. I also presented three main ideas that helped prove my point as to why my movie is the greatest.

In the piece I discuss the writer’s and producer’s use of both pathos and logos. The movie showed the logic and reality behind the historical events. The writer also played on the audience’s pathos by building the successes of a young mentally challenged boy. The rhetorical element that was the most present in my paper was ethos and then logos. Ethos was shown by the way i presented my paper through an opening that grabbed the audience’s attention and a thesis that was clear and direct. The paper showed logos through the quotes, reviews, and personal experience of those who’ve watched the movie.

My argument was effective. I presented a clear thesis that stated three reasons why Forrest Gump is the best movie of all time. The information was backed by resources from notable sources such as reviews, critiques, and statistics. I think that anyone could argue that their movie was the greatest as long as they back it up with knowledge and points that are clear and concise.

Separation of Church and State

19 Sep

This reading was basically discussing the fact that Christmas or any other holiday should not be displayed in government places. The writer is a strong believer in the separation of church and state. He goes on to discuss how Christian based holidays strongly disagree with what the government has gotten our country involved in. For instance, how can there be a scene of the nativity in the same place that has entered our country into many wars.

I do not agree with this. I do believe in the separation of church and state. I think that schools should not be allowed to speak about God or anyone else’s beliefs for that matter. It becomes more acceptable as you progress into higher learning, but for a child I don’t believe it was right.

As far as in government settings, I think it is okay. Our country was grounded on Christianity. Our pledge of allegiance says “in one nation under GOD.” On our currency it says in God’s name we trust, so for us to say there should be NO intersection between the two is harsh. The writer made some very good points but I think he failed to realize that some of these things are grounded in our countries history. As far as visual displays and decoration, I do not seem to mind. I guess it depends on the person. Christianity will still be held at a high regard. Continue reading

Eat Your Brains

13 Sep

I do not think that the components of the song were put together well. There was no real logic when it came to what the song was talking about or what tey wanted to do.

What did stand out in the song was the constant repitition of the zoombies wanted to eat the humans brain. I’m not sure what they tried to achieve, but the audience would be humans. They dont use logical techniques but I assume they used a little bit of emotion to make you scared.

The peice could actually be arguing how all people in the work force may be turning into zoombies eventually, but it is hard to understand.
